What is Eco-Terr® Tile made from?
Eco-Terr® Tile is engineered from recycled Portland cement, fly ash rescued from waterway contamination, and marble and granite chips sourced from permanently closed quarries. The manufacturing process is entirely resin-free and epoxy-free, resulting in zero VOC emissions. No virgin stone is mined, no synthetic binders are used — just pre-consumer recycled material transformed into a durable, beautiful surface. Does Eco-Terr® Tile contain any resins, epoxies, or VOCs?
No. Eco-Terr® Tile contains zero resins, zero epoxies, and zero synthetic binders. This distinguishes it from the majority of engineered terrazzo products on the market, which rely on epoxy or polyester matrices to bind aggregates. The cement-based composition means Eco-Terr® supports non-microbial growth, emits no volatile organic compounds, and maintains its integrity without chemical
degradation over time.
Is Eco-Terr® Tile PFAS-free?
Yes. Eco-Terr® Tile is fully PFAS-free. CoveringsETC has formulated Eco-Terr® without any PFAS compounds, making it compatible with the most stringent indoor environmental quality standards and increasingly mandatory procurement policies at the institutional and governmental level.
Does Eco-Terr® Tile qualify for LEED credits?
Yes. Eco-Terr® Tile is manufactured with pre-consumer recycled content and may contribute toward LEED credits under the USGBC certification framework. Applicable credit categories typically include Materials and Resources credits for recycled content and responsible sourcing. Project teams should consult with their LEED AP to confirm applicable credits, and CoveringsETC provides full documentation to support the specification process.
What finishes are available?
Eco-Terr® Tiles are available in three standard finishes:
- Honed: A matte, smooth surface with a soft sheen.
- Polished: A high-gloss finish that enhances color depth and aggregate clarity.
- Microlinen: A micro-textured finish that achieves the highest DCOF rating in the market, making it the right choice for wet areas, exterior applications, and commercial floors requiring slip resistance.
Is Eco-Terr® Tile suitable for outdoor and freeze-thaw environments?
Yes. Eco-Terr® Tile is frost-resistant and engineered for outdoor use, including climates that experience freeze-thaw cycles. It is also fire-resistant, chemical-resistant, and UV-stable, making it appropriate for terraces, pool decks, plazas, and exterior facades. For outdoor installations, the Microlinen finish is recommended for optimal slip performance.
How does Eco-Terr® Tile compare to epoxy terrazzo?
Traditional epoxy terrazzo uses a petroleum-derived resin matrix that can off-gas VOCs during installation. Eco-Terr® is resin-free and epoxy-free, using Portland cement as the binder, which is inert, non-toxic, and does not off-gas. Eco-Terr® also holds HPD certification and a carbon-negative footprint—claims epoxy terrazzo systems cannot make.
Can Eco-Terr® Tile be used on walls as well as floors?
Yes. Eco-Terr® Tiles are appropriate for a wide range of vertical and horizontal applications including floors, walls, countertops, vanities, cove bases, pool surrounds, exterior facades, and furniture surfaces. Using the same collection for both indoor and outdoor spaces simplifies the design palette and provides material continuity.
What is the expected lifespan?
Eco-Terr® Tile is engineered for a limitless lifecycle. Cement-based terrazzo has one of the longest documented performance histories in architecture, with floors in Europe remaining intact after centuries. Unlike synthetic flooring, it does not degrade chemically over time, and end-of-life material can be recycled as aggregate.
How do I clean and maintain it?
For routine cleaning, use a neutral pH detergent with clean water. For high-risk environments like restaurants or commercial kitchens, apply a stain-resistant hydro-repellent (such as FILA MP90) or an oil-repellent treatment (such as FILAFOB). These should be applied to a clean, dry surface and will not alter the tile's color or finish.
Can I order samples before specifying?
Yes. CoveringsETC offers material samples to help evaluate color, finish, and texture. Trade professionals (architects, designers, and contractors) can request samples directly through the CoveringsETC website or by contacting a sales representative. Registered trade accounts receive prioritized access to sample ordering.
